The city of Mounds View was located in the former Mounds View Township, which included parts of present-day Shoreview, Arden Hills, and Spring Lake Park. Today, Mounds View is primarily known for the Mermaid Bowling Alley, Wynnsong Movie Theater, large, wooded residential lots, and the excellence of the Mounds View School District (which includes nearby New Brighton, Shoreview, Arden Hills, and North Oaks).

On July 8, 1986, a gasoline pipeline ruptured. A car ignited the gas causing an explosion which killed 2. As a result, the Office of Pipeline Safety in the Minnesota Department of Public Safety was created.
